Custodial Services

The Custodial Department provides cleaning services for approximately 1.5 million square feet of campus facilities. In addition to cleaning, the department's special crew for hardwood floors has an annual responsibility of resurfacing all hardwood floors on campus. This consists of approximately 44,000 square feet. The majority of the custodial crew works the night shift from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, to provide services to all administrative and academic buildings. We also support the Housing Department's emergency needs at residence halls. Seventeen of our employees work the day shift and keeps things manageable until the main force arrives for their night shift.

We have improved our cleaning methods by switching from "zone cleaning" to "team cleaning." This change has proven to be more productive, easier to supervise, and requires less equipment. As some of the older pieces of equipment requires replacement, we have been purchasing state-of-the-art equipment such as "backpack vacuums", with improved HEPA filtering systems, instead of the older "upright" units.
