Doors

The standard door size at Georgia Southern is a 3' x 7' door. Odd sized doors shall be avoided.

Steel Doors: Steel doors and frames shall conform to the Steel Door Institute Publication "Recommended Specifications: Standard Steel Doors and Frames" (SD1-100). Exterior doors will be at least 16 gauge and insulated. Glass in exterior doors shall be insulated.
Wood Doors: Wood doors shall conform to the designated industry standards of the National Woodwork Manufacturers Association. Stave core doors shall be used.

Hardware: ADA acceptable levered door handles will be used. Door knobs are unacceptable. Concealed vertical rod panic devices and other hard to reach for maintenance purposes hardware shall not be used on doors. Surface mounted vertical rod exit devices are also highly discouraged. Whenever possible, removable (by key) mullions shall be used. The use of floor mounted hinges and pivots is discouraged. If used, they will be set in cincrete and not into bricks or pavers.

Exit Devices
    Touch-bar panic hardware and rim type will be used wherever possible. These provide least frequency of maintenance. Exit devices that are integral with the door assembly shall not be used.

Automatic Door Operators
    In all new building and additions, at least one set of main entry doors shall be equipped with automatic door operators. Pneumatic operators are preferred, i.e. LCN 4829 series. Where pneumatic operators are not practical, electrical operators may be used.
Key Cylinders
    Best is the campus standard. Permission for the use of any other must be obtained in writing from the Director of Physical Plant.
The contractor shall furnish all door hardware completely installed and ready to use with a removable construction key cylinder core. The lock manufacturer shall deliver the actual cylinders, cores and key to the owner at the contractor's expense. After final inspection, the owner will be responsible for the installation of the permanent key cylinder cores.

Door Frames: One piece steel door frames are acceptable and shall be made of at least 16 gauge material. Knock-down frames are not acceptable in new construction.

 
Windows

Frame: Metal windows (steel or alumium) should be provided with insulated and thermally broken frames, and double glazing. Wood windows are generally not acceptable unless used to match existing windows and metal windows with an appropriate profile are unavailable.
Georgia Southern's standard mullion color is white. In the rare circumstance when white is inappropiate, charcoal may be used. Any variance from the use of white must be approved by the University.

Glass:
Float Glass: 1/4"
Tempered Glass: 1/4"
Insulating Glass: One inch thick, Formed of two pieces of glass separated by a dehydrated hermetically sealed air space. Insulating glass shall be used on all non-operable exterior windows. Dividers, if used, shall be between the structural post and the glass. Low "e" glass shall be used for all exterior applications. Warranty on insulating glass: 10 years minimum.
