Design and Construction Standards

Conveying Systems

Elevators
A. General Compliance
ADA compliant telephones shall be installed in all elevators, be connected to the Public Safety Building and be completely operative prior to final acceptance. Telephone line installation and programming will be scheduled through the Georgia Southern University Office of Telecommunications. When the fire alarm is activated, the elevator shall return to a predetermined level and remain there until the alarm is reset or the Fire Alarm System cleared.
B. Mechanical Rooms
Mechanical rooms at an elevation other than grade with an exterior access will have elevators of sufficient size and capacity to convey all equipment installed in the room to the level on which the room is located. Alternate conveying systems to these locations may by proposed for consideration and approval by Georgia Southern.
C. Hydraulic Cylinder Shafts
The hydraulic cylinder of all hydraulic elevators shall be placed in leak proof casing prior to being installed in the shaft. It is suggested that a PVC casing with a sealed bottom be used. In addition, a bentonite plug will be placed in the shaft between the casing and the shaft wall to make a water tight seal around the casing.
D. Hydraulic Fluid
The elevator equipment shall use a totally non-toxic, biodegradable, environmentally friendly, anti-wear vegetable based hydraulic fluid. The fluid shall be formulated to meet the demands of biodegradable elevator hydraulic fluid.
E. Safety Edge
The safety edge shall be an infrared beam rather than a mechanical device.
