The Mission Statement of the Environmental Sustainability division of Georgia Southern University is to establish sustainable practices that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The intent is to provide the best outcomes for the human environment and the natural environment both now and into the indefinite future.
- Educate GSU's community about global warning and solutions
- Enhance human relations by using environmentally sound living practices
- Improve indoor air quality (IAQ) by using eco-friendly products
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Improve water quality by developing a Storm Water Master Plan
- Decrease cost for energy production by using energy saving measures
- Decrease overall campus waste stream by using recycled products
Presidents Climate Commitment: In December of 2007, President Bruce Grube signed the 'American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment'. The document has been signed by presidents of over 500 colleges and universities in the United States. To see monthly updates, go to AASHE's website.
RecycleMania: According to it's website, "RecycleMania is a friendly competition among college and university recycling programs in the United States that provides the campus community with a fun, proactive activity in waste reduction. Over a 10-week period, campuses compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate." RecycleMania is one of two required tangilbe actions of the Presidents Climate Commitment to reduce greenhouse gases while a more comprehensive plan is being developed.

Comprehensive Environment Plan: *Will include information about the inventorying of trees on campus and how it will progress.*
Reuse Water: Georgia Southern University is in the design phase of a joint effort program with the City of Statesboro to deliver reuse water to the campus for irrigation use. Reuse water will replace an estimated 300,000 gallons per month currently pumped from the aquifer.
LEED Certified: The RAC Expansion, completed in 2007, is on-track to become the first LEED Certified project on the campus. Designers used a variety of strategies to earn this eligibility. From site issues such as storm water management, reduced site disturbance, efficient irrigation system, to sensitive use of materials and resources such as construction waste management, recycled materials, sensitivity to indoor environmental quality, such as maximizing the daylight, and low-emitting materials, the design team was able to meet the requirements of the LEED Certification. Presently, these strategies are under review.
