Iron Eagle V Results and Pictures

About the Race

The fifth annual Iron Eagle Challenge (IEC) will be held on Friday, October 30th from 3-6pm. The IEC is an adventure race that travels through Georgia Southern University's scenic campus.
Runners
The course requires two person race teams to off-road/urban cycle, run/walk, canoe, and conquer many mystery challenges along the way. The mystery challenges require both mental and physical skills and provide a nice break from cycling and running, making the race possible for anyone in moderate cardiovascular shape. This is the perfect race for those "super competitive" types, as well as those who would just like to have a fun time while getting some exercise! Many former competitors have compared the race to the popular television show The Amazing Race.

Canoeing

The Iron Eagle Challenge totals around 4-5 miles, starting and ending at GSU's Recreation Activity Center (RAC), with the majority of the mileage taking place on the bike.

What will I need?

The first thing you will need is a partner to race with and a team name that is original. With regards to equipment, all racers will be required to bring/rent/borrow/steal (okay, don't steal):

* A bike suitable for on/off road cycling
* A cycling helmet

Bike
* Tight spandex (not required, but more fun)

Don't have a bike or helmet? Southern Adventures is renting their mountain bikes and helmets out to anyone racing. Stop by the Southern Adventures Center located in the Recreation Activity Center (RAC) ASAP to reserve a bike/helmet. There is a very limited quantity of bikes/helmets available so act now!

Attend the Pre-race Meeting

At least one member from each team will be required to attend the Iron Eagle Challenge pre-race meeting. The meeting will be held on Monday, October 27, 2009 at 8:00 and 9:00pm. If for some strange reason you are unable to attend the meeting, please contact us in advance to make other arrangements.

Awards Ceremony and Raffle

After the race, we will have snacks and drinks available at the RAC pavilion. The awards ceremony and raffle will be held shortly after the last racers are off the course at the RAC Amphitheater. Check back soon to see the sweet prizes for the raffle that have been donated by our gracious sponsors.

Sponsorship

Mystery Events Sponsorship

In order to make this event a success we are seeking to attain sponsorship, in the form of volunteers, for the several mystery events held during the Iron Eagle Challenge. The race is a wonderful opportunity for campus clubs, organizations, and departments to get some free publicity, while earning some volunteer hours in a fun atmosphere.

Mystery event sponsors for this race will make it a success by helping out with the following tasks:

  1. Staffing one of the mystery events during the race
  2. Providing high energy motivation to the racers at your event
  3. Assisting with directing racers through the course
  4. Keeping racers safe

As a sponsor, your club, department, or organization will receive:

  1. Free food and drink at the post-race party for volunteers
  2. The opportunity to set up a booth and/or banner advertising for your department/organization/club at the post race party
  3. Free publicity at the pre-race meeting and post-race party via microphone announcements
  4. An opportunity to earn volunteer hours
  5. A chance to be part of a high energy, fun event on campus!
  6. One free ticket per volunteer entered into the IEC raffle with sweet prizes

Mystery events will consist of obstacle course style challenges that will test the racer's abilities both physically and mentally. Event sponsors can choose to staff a pre-established event or create their own. If you choose to create your own, it should be designed for two-person teams and should take approximately 2-15 minutes max for each time to complete.

The Iron Eagle Challenge will take place on Friday, October 30th, 2009. The start time for the race is 3:00pm and we predict that the race will end no later than ~6:00pm. Event sponsors will need to plan to be at their event from around 2:30pm until the last set of racers has passed their event on race day. In addition we will schedule a pre-race meeting sometime during the week before the event to make sure your group has all the details. Without volunteers this event would not be possible. Please contact us if you can help us with this event or if you have further questions. It's going to be a blast!

Volunteers

Without the help of our wonderful volunteers, this race would not be possible. Race volunteers can do a variety of tasks such as working the pre-race check-in, directing racers through the course, food setup, and finish line crew. If you are interested in volunteering your time please contact our Volunteer Coordinator.

Race Divisions

Prizes will be given to the top 3 teams with the overall beat time, as well as the winner of each of the following divisions:
Men's
Women's
Co-Rec
Student Organizations
