Established in 1990, the Southern Explosion Dance Club is currently composed of students from a variety of majors who all share a passion for dance. The team is made up of approximately 15-17 individuals, the number is never set. We take girls based upon talent, not numbers. We start the season in August, having a fall tryout shortly after. Although the Dance Team is considered a club sport, the team performs at many varsity athletic events, including all men’s home basketball games. In addition to the variety of performances on campus, we compete at the National Dance Association (NDA) Nationals in Daytona, FL the first weekend of April in jazz and hip-hop categories.

Tryouts are usually held at the end of August or beginning of September. Tryouts are only ONE day. Upon your arrival most of the girls stretch in preparation for the tryouts. First, we do skills which include: leaps, side leaps, switch leaps, ronverses, axles, pirouettes (doubles, triples, quads, etc.), fouettes, turns in seconds, splits, flexibility, any other tricks. After the skills portion, we will teach you two routines. One routine will be a short jazz routine and the other will a short hip-hop routine. Following the tryout, numbers will be posted for the girls we are accepting on the team. Our tryout date is set for April 28th from 11am-UNTIL

Practice times are Sunday 6-9pm, Tuesday and Thursday 7-9pm in the combative studio 2.
