RAC LEED CertificationSTATESBORO, Ga. – Aug. 19, 2009 – Georgia Southern University’s Recreation Activity Center (RAC) has been awarded LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Buildings must meet strict standards regarding energy efficiency and environmental responsibility in order to be LEED certified.
"The Recreation Activity Center is a source of pride at Georgia Southern not only because it provides our students with an exceptional outlet for physical fitness, but because it meets rigorous environmental standards set forth by the USGBC," said Teresa Thompson, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management. "Sustainability is very important to the University. Having one of the most prominent ![]() buildings on campus LEED certified shows students our commitment to doing what we can to preserve the environment for them and for their children." The RAC is one of the premier facilities on campus and includes a two-story climbing wall, an indoor 11-lane competition pool and diving well, indoor soccer courts, multiple volleyball and basketball courts, and fitness machines. The RAC also includes a Wellness Center which features massage therapy, a full athletic training staff, and even a smoothie bar.

CRI has presented many classes to the Georgia Southern community and Bulloch County including first aid, wilderness first aid, CPR, AED, and lifeguard training which were all taught by CRI employees. Recently, CRI partnered with Red Cross for the Lifeguard Challenge Program, which offered community members a chance to become recertified in lifeguarding, CPR & AED at the RAC Aquatics Center. CRI has also volunteered for other Red Cross events.
For the first time ever, the “Health and Safety Volunteer of the Year Award” was presented to both CRI and Splash in the ‘Boro for outstanding commitment to volunteering within the city of Statesboro. CRI has offered multiple sports workshops and training courses at minimum or no cost to the community, while also volunteering and facilitating Red Cross events. Accepting the award on behalf of CRI was Aquatics Director, James Browning. "I think this award will help people recognize what a big player Georgia Southern University is within the community. Georgia Southern dedicates a lot of time to the city of Statesboro and this is a nice feather in our cap to keep us striving to do more," said Browning.
The "Health and Safety Volunteer of The Year Award" was presented by Lynn Bowen, Executive Director of the Bulloch County Chapter to James Browning, Aquatics Director, on behalf of CRI.
