Common E-mail Problems

The three most common error messages from bounced mail are listed below.

host unknown --The host name (the part of the e-mail address after the @ sign) can not be translated into the name of a computer connected to the Internet. The most common cause is typographical errors. For example, sending mail to john_doe@GeorgiaSouthern.edu would cause an error because GeorgiaSouthern.edu is misspelled.

user unknown --The host to which you sent the mail, (the part of the e-mail address after the @ sign) does not have an e-mail account for the user you specified. The most common cause is typographical errors. For example, sending mail to john_poe@GeorgiaSouthern.edu would cause an error because john_doe in misspelled.

insufficient permission -- Delivery of a message can not be completed because delivering the message would exceed the disk quota for that account.
